ATHLONE (Athlone, Co. Westmeath, Ireland)

Urban quarter redevelopment.

I participated in the development of a new urban quarter in Athlone Town Centre whilst with Murray O'Laoire Architects. The circa 2.9 hectares site was a mix of infill and backland plots, ‘brownfield’ uses and semi-derelict structures.

The challenge was to integrate a retail enterprise into a historic setting, concealing parking facilities and blending contemporary builds with mature existing builds. We also imposed a new order of patterned streets and lanes, squares and courtyards in the centre of town.

The project included 66 retail units; 148 residential units in disaggregated blocks of apartments and townhouses set around squares, courtyards and playgrounds; restaurants and cafes; a crèche; a primary healthcare facility; and a 170-bed, 4-star, 11-storey hotel at its core, marking the commercial centre of town.

I was chiefly involved in the interiors of the retail space while I worked at Murray O'Laoire Architects
