CROMCASTLE SHOPPING CENTRE

CROMCASTLE (Cromcastle, Dublin, Ireland)

Urban design development

The 30-hectare Cromcastle project, ranking amongst the largest mixed-use urban projects ever proposed in Ireland, encompassed an overall re-development of a severely neglected quarter on the outskirts of Dublin city. The ambitious “Cromcastle Shopping Centre” was 'my baby' whilst I worked at Murray O'Laoire Architects, and I was involved with the project from the very conception to the submission of planning application.

The shopping centre comprised of 45,000 sqm retail space throughout two floors over a single basement floor of car parking. Natural landscape details, including green spaces and water features, were integrated into the shopping development itself in the form of tendril-like courtyards that provided shoppers and workers alike with relief from man-made vistas.

My activities included all drawings of the retail centre, liaising with planning, fire and environmental authorities, and addressing all aspects of scheme design. It was also critical that this project be harmoniously incorporated into the overall redevelopment scheme.
